You can actually stall them for quite a while. I have worked in the collections business and have been amazed at how crafty some individuals are to avoid collection agencies.

Collections agencies’ power mostly comes from ruining your credit and harassing you endlessly, which is now against the law per the FDCPA (The harassing part).

They usually buy debt at 5–10 cents on the dollar so they normally don’t make huge efforts to collect other than the automated which is ruining your credit. They know full well that if you ever want to do something like buy a car, buy a house and now days get a job, you will be compelled to take care of the issue somehow.

There are people who actually run out the statute of limitations and never pay… they literally get away with it.
